PRODUCT LAUNCH
10
You can't just jump into product development without doing your homework first. You need to research what is already on the market and how people or machines are currently solving problems. At this stage, you need to identify market and intellectual property opportunities. Perform a SWOT analysis and answer many questions including:
1
What problems or pain points does your product address? What are the current alternatives people use? Are there any patents on similar inventions?

Who do you want to sell your product to (your target market)? What are their demographics? Where would they want to buy the product? How much would they pay for it?

What features does your idea need to solve the target audience's problems or address their wants and needs? What's the bare minimum required? Be sure to list any constraints here.
By answering the questions above, you will be able to develop a plan for your idea development and have reliable data to make an educated decision about your next steps. Our company offers a comprehensive Product Discovery Service that includes our proprietary idea development tool, Realizr.

Now that you've decided on your next steps based on Product Discovery outputs, it's time to create a conceptual design of your idea. It's typically done in a CAD (computer aided design) software.
During the concept design or industrial design stage, engineers and designers will consider the wants and needs of your target audience, as well as any constraints you may have to ensure that your product will meets all the expectations in terms of the look, feel, and function.
Concept design is vital for conveying your vision and laying foundation for technical design, engineering, and prototyping. It shows how the product will look, what it can do, and what materials it is made of, plus, how to assemble it.
Our team will be happy to assist you with this important step. Learn more and contact us here.

PROVISIONAL PATENT APPLICATION

In order to protect your idea at an early stage, we recommend submitting a Provisional Patent Application with USPTO. This way you will be able to secure your idea and run consumer surveys to improve your idea, identify weak spots, and work on those to increase the chances of your idea success. Our company will not be able to do that for you, but we will be happy to recommend several patent attorneys or agents who will excel at this task.

So, you have a conceptual design of your product. You know all the ins and outs of how it will look and work. You've done all your planning and covered all your bases, at least when it comes to the idea itself.

But before you invest in prototyping and testing, you may want to ask your potential consumers what they think about your concept. In the survey you could ask about the features they like and don't like, the alternatives they currently use, and the price they'd be willing to pay for your product. Their responses would help you to further optimize the design and to improve your product-market fit.

Ideally, you'd want to interview your customers in-person through focus groups or individually, an online survey could be a good alternative. You may want to start by interviewing a broad group until you identify your market niche and then focus on surveying the customers in that segment. The depth of the survey will depend on the complexity and scale of your idea, but also on the number of possible markets.

Prototyping is a vital part of product development, where craft, sciences, and technology come together to bring your idea to life. A prototype is essential in order to evaluate the design of your idea and find potential areas for improvement.

The prototyping process is also an opportunity to be creative and improve upon your invention from various angles such as performance, look, and marketability. It can streamline the manufacturing process and lower cost significantly.

Depending on the complexity of your idea and desired outcomes, you may need to consider several types of prototypes during this phase of development.

If you are looking to file a patent for your invention, the drawings and the description of your product must be provided to a patent attorney/agent in order to initiate the filing process. Our team is unfortunately unable to assist with this stage, but we are more than happy to provide referrals to reliable patent attorneys and agents.
